Hi
April 2

Morning Maths

This term we have been using the time before school really starts 8.30 am and a little after the bell 8.55 am to sharpen our maths fluency skills. We have been working on our recall skills for number facts. We were taught a great game called flip.

Using a pack of cards we flip over a card and we need to say the number to finish the fact. Learning facts to ten. All number cards are face value e.g. 7 of hearts is worth seven. Picture cards Jack, Queen and King are worth ten. Aces are worth one.

Using a timer we set one minute to go through the pack. When the minute is up, we count our successful cards. We have found that over the weeks our totals are increasing. We are recalling facts a lot quicker. The helps us when we need to calculate in problem solving.

The great thing about flip is we can play it individually or in partners. When we feel really confident, Ellen does a game with us to test our skills.

Once we are confident at one fact family, we challenge ourselves for different amounts such as to 20, or to 8. It’s great fun. Beepers are going off everywhere, there is a hive of mathematical activity.

As we move into learning our multiplication facts we can still play flip, instead of making totals to a number, we can multiply the card shown by a certain table number e.g. pull a seven, times by two is 14. So we can learn our two times table facts a lot quicker.

There’s a lot to be said about practice makes perfect.

What do you think about morning maths?

How have you improved in recalling your facts?

What helps you or gets in the way?

Which tables do you think you should begin with?

      Hi Sabitri,
I thought that was the case I remember that you said you didn’t want to go to camp because you’d miss your kumon. Wow it must be fabulous stuff for you to say that! Well it must be working because no one can get close to you …yet! Perhaps you show show us what you do. You never know it may help some one else.
      Thanks Ellen

    Dear Ellen,
I was surprised because I thought I did not know my five times tables but I guess I do. I think six times tables are piece of cake. I am excited for accelerated reader certificates because last time you checked there was a certificate for me! I hope by the end of the term I know all my times tables and no one can steel my crown.

      Greetings Oh Queen of Maths,
well times tables at least. How do you earn them so quickly? I know it doesn’t just happen you must be working very hard. Keep it up. You will have to share your secrets. I don’t think you are in danger of having someone take your crown…just yet..you never know!

      Hello Sabitri,
Yes I am finally feeling better. Great to know you have kept your crown it will take a lot of work to take it off you.sad to hear you were also not well. We will keep on doing some multiplication and of course more science on night and day. We could make a camp movie trailer when I sort out the film I took. We als have to do some explanation writing. I think we’ll be busy.
      You’ll love it.

      Hi Montana,
Yes I did know that he was your foundation sports teacher. So how do you like Mr Tom? Is he as funny as Mr P? Mr P can be quite silly sometimes! Does Mr Tom do different things? Cheers Ellen

    Bula Ellen,
I really like morning maths and I know that I am amazing at it because I’m princess! I love doing 2 times tables but I also want to do 3 times tables but I don’t know the answers to them so it’s a bit hard. I could just work the answers out but that would just waste time. I guess I will have to do it when I have spare time or I could work them out at home then write them down on a piece of paper then bring that piece of paper to school then write them in my book. I think I will do that! How amazing is that taa dah!

Hi Dylan, That is probably a good idea. Have you worked on the ones we have to know yet? That might be the ones to start from. Who tests you at home?
