Hi

Board Games

Last term during our science investigations on Day and Night, students chose to either research in depth The Sun or The Moon. Armed with this new learning I asked each child to design a board game that would teach people about their topic.

We began by playing some games and brainstorming what we thought games had.

Then we listed things that made a game fun to play.

Designing and making the pathways on our board game was fun.

Even though we made the games independently, we still needed to work together to share information and equipment.

We needed a  lot of mathematics, numeracy and literacy skills for our science activity.

After designing our own pathways we needed to create questions to ask using the Question Matrix.

We are pretty proud of the effort we put into our games. Perhaps you’ll get to play them. Our neighbours in a year five class played some of our games and chose 4 of them to be entered into the Sir Mark Oliphant Science awards. We wish them well.

How good are these?

What was the best thing about making the board games?

How did you feel about other children playing your games?

Actually Kate there is a display of all the competition entries in the staff room we keep getting too busy and I forget to take the class in. Remind me tomorrow!
      Thanks Ellen

Yes that has been one thing we never have proof of until now, your family get to see your commitments.

We have them but we’re waiting for the competition ones to return. I thought we could have an afternoon when we played the all because we haven’t had that much time yet.

Thank you for the opportunity for me to make a board game.I liked making the board game because I got to learn about the Moon. I hope people will enjoy playing my game as much as I have.

I hope they do too, especially the judges for the Sir Mark Oliphant competition. I’m glad you enjoyed learning through playing. have you been watching the Moon to check out its phases? You should try it.

I’m glad you had fun learning. I still have lots of questions about those objects too, we never stop asking questions and we continue to learn. Perhaps your maths and science skills will take you to NASA and you can find out what you need to know. I never got to do the cool things you guys get so I missed out making board games at school, but when I went to study teaching I made lots of games. I wonder what the judges thought of our ideas. I hope they appreciate all that effort.

I know you did because you were so enthusiastic and you learnt so much. Stars are fascinating objects indeed. I’m glad you enjoyed the astronomy topic.
